A Message from NIPSCO

This summer has been HOT – and a lot. As we look toward cooler days of fall, please know how much I appreciate the opportunity to support your requests for information about the continuously changing landscape of energy in Indiana.

We’ve been fielding questions about energy costs and bills for NIPSCO electric customers as the summer heat and rate increase impacted bills. In response, we compiled our notes from customer comments and stakeholder conversations into the attached document.

Multiple factors affect electric rates and billing:

  • Inflation has significantly increased the cost of materials
  • Investments in infrastructure are necessary to ensure reliability and withstand extreme weather
  • Hotter temperatures mean more electricity is used to run AC units
  • A combined gas and electric bill feels like a bigger budget impact than two separate bills – despite printing and mailing cost savings.

Here’s how we’re working to reduce the impact:

  • Energy assistance supports customers with a variety of programs such as payment and budget plans and income-eligible assistance.
  • In 2026, a new assistance program rolls out to support summer cooling
