Why Chamber Membership Matters More Than Ever

For many businesses, joining a chamber of commerce is viewed as a networking opportunity. While networking is certainly valuable, research shows chamber membership delivers something even more powerful: trust.

When a business joins its local chamber, it sends a clear message to customers, employees, and the community that it is invested in the region’s success and committed to doing business with integrity.

The Research Behind Chamber Membership

A landmark study conducted by The Schapiro Group surveyed 2,000 adults to understand how consumers view businesses that belong to their local chamber of commerce. The findings were striking.

Consumers consistently viewed chamber member businesses more favorably than non-members. Simply knowing a business belongs to a chamber significantly improved public perception.

The study found that chamber membership can increase:

  • Favorability by 44% to 49%
  • Business awareness by 51% to 73%
  • Reputation by 57% to 68%
  • Future purchase intent by as much as 80%

In other words, chamber membership doesn’t just help businesses connect with other organizations. It influences how customers perceive and support them.

The Power of Community Trust

Today’s consumers want to do business with organizations they trust. Chamber membership serves as a visible indicator that a business is engaged in its community and committed to ethical business practices.

According to the research, chamber membership is:

  • 29% more effective at communicating good business practices
  • 26% more effective at reinforcing a positive reputation
  • 13% more effective at demonstrating a commitment to customers

Businesses whose leaders take an active role in chamber activities, such as serving on committees or boards, see even greater benefits. Consumers are more likely to believe these businesses offer superior products and services compared to their competitors.

Chamber Membership Drives Purchasing Decisions

The impact extends beyond perception. Chamber membership influences where consumers choose to spend their money.

The study found that:

  • Consumers are 68% more likely to dine at a chamber-member restaurant.
  • Chamber-affiliated insurance companies see a 43% increase in consumers’ likelihood to purchase insurance.
  • Car dealerships experience a 31% increase in consumers’ intent to buy their next vehicle from them.

These findings demonstrate that chamber membership can have a direct impact on revenue and customer acquisition.

The Opportunity Businesses Can’t Afford to Miss

While public trust in chambers remains exceptionally strong, many consumers still don’t know which businesses belong to their local chamber.

According to a 2024 survey by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), 81% of adults trust their local chamber, yet only 40% can identify chamber member businesses.

This creates a significant opportunity.

When consumers know a business is a chamber member:

  • 64% are more likely to purchase from that business
  • 63% are more likely to recommend that business to others

The takeaway is simple: membership matters, but promoting your membership matters even more.

Maximizing the Value of Your Membership

Businesses can strengthen the impact of their chamber membership by making it visible and engaging actively within the community.

Here are a few ways to get the most from your membership:

Display Your Membership

Add your chamber member logo or trust badge to your website, marketing materials, and storefront. Let customers know you’re part of a trusted local business network.

Get Involved

Attend events, join committees, sponsor programs, and participate in community initiatives. Visibility builds credibility and creates valuable connections.

Share Your Story

Highlight your chamber involvement on social media, in newsletters, and through your marketing channels. The more people know about your commitment to the community, the stronger the impact.
